Here at Kingshill we offer a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. We believe pupils develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing and analyse the situation to make decisions. They also reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles. Discovering what they like to do and how and where to get involved in physical activity helps them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.

The Curriculum
‘Core Skills’ are taught so pupils are given the opportunity to …

  • Year 7 - 'Create' and 'Assess' new physical skills
  • Year 8 - perform as an effective 'Player' and 'Group / Team'
  • Year 9 - 'Plan' for and 'Answer' set challenges
  • Year 10/11 - act as a Junior Sports 'Leader'

Teaching, learning and assessment is based on the core skills required for successful athletes and sports teams. Lessons are taught to the needs of the class.

Pupils progress within three stages …

  1. ‘Development’ stage (knowledge and understanding of physical skills)
  2. 'Intermediate' stage (strategies and tactics when performing as an individual or team)
  3. 'Advanced' stage (adopting different sporting roles other than a performer)

Lessons also encourage students to adopt sports.

  ‘Leadership’ responsibilities. A balance of teacher led learning and independent pupil learning is an important aspect of Physical Education lessons.

Pupils are taught using ‘Sports Activity Maps’ that provide the required standards for each sports activity block. Each sports activity block is taught for 4 weeks at a time, which is generally 12 lessons (4 double lessons and 4 single lessons).

Assessment levels are to be certificated at the end of the year identifying current level. This is based on a Bronze, Silver and Gold standard.

Students complete a self assessment sheet to monitor their own progress throughout the year. PE level descriptors and the self assessment sheets are in the students planner. Again these levels are based on the core skills.

Extra Curricular PE / Sports

The PE faculty offer a variety of PE / sports clubs each week. These clubs provide an opportunityfor students to pursue activities that are included in the curriculum as well as new and alternative sports. These clubs also allow students the opportunity to represent the school when attending visits, fixtures or y10

Students who are identified as Gifted and Talented with PE are invited onto a lifestyle management pathway, known as the PE ‘GATE’ programme. The programme is offered from term 3 every other week. Each session will target different year groups and skills. Students within KS3 focus on leadership and physical performance skills.


Throughout KS4 a series of workshops supported by mentoring sessions are available to those students who are county, national and international performers for their individual sport. Pupils are also ‘fast –tracked’ for the Double GCSE Award in year 10 / 11 allowing them to gain two GCSE’s within Physical Education.
