Expressive Arts

The Faculty of Expressive Arts includes the ArtDrama, Photography and Music Departments.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, pupils have one lesson per week for Art, Drama and Music. At GCSE students have one double and one single lesson per week for Art, Drama, Photography and Music. There are usually two GCSE Art groups, one or two GCSE Drama groups, one GCSE Photography group and one GCSE Music group in both Years 10 and 11.

The Music Department has one large Music Room, an Ensemble Room and five Practise Rooms. The department is very well equipped, including sixteen i-Mac computers. The Art Department consists of two specialist teaching rooms. There are also several areas for the display of art throughout the school. For Drama we have a fully equipped ‘black-box’ Drama Studio which can seat 100 people. We also have a second Drama Studio with with a computer suite attached for creative work. School productions and Concerts etc. have taken place in the Sports Hall or Gym, these spaces can be converted into large theatre spaces with staging equipment owned by the school. In 2019 the School also used The Griffin Theatre to stage our production.

In addition to standard curriculum work, the Expressive Arts Faculty produces regular Music Concerts, an annual Talent Show, a Key Stage 3 Showcase, Gifted and Talented Days, Art Exhibitions, trips to Art Galleries in the UK and abroad, trips to Theatres as well as hosting theatre companies in school. The largest scale event is the annual School Production. This is always a musical and involves about 30 staff and 150 pupils from all year groups. The most recent productions are:

2019 Jesus Christ Superstar

2018 Billy Elliott

2016 Into the Woods

2015 Our House

2014 Little Shop of Horrors

In 2010 the Arts Council awarded Kingshill School the Artsmark Gold Award in recognition of the work of the Expressive Arts Faculty, Dance Department, Extra-Curricular Arts work and teaching of the arts across the curriculum.
