An Inspector Calls

A powerful performance, a day of discovery — theatre that made us think

Term 5, Week 3

Our recent trip to see a live production of An Inspector Calls proved to be a powerful experience for our Year 10 students—not only in bringing their English Literature studies to life, but also in encouraging reflection on important social themes.

The day offered a well-balanced mix of culture and independence, with students enjoying time in Birmingham’s Bullring before heading to the theatre. This gave them a chance to relax, socialise, and experience a bustling city setting together.

The performance itself left a lasting impression. Students were struck by the intensity of the staging and the emotional weight of the characters. It prompted meaningful conversations about responsibility, justice, and how the issues explored in the play still echo in today’s world.

We were incredibly proud of how our students conducted themselves throughout the day. Their thoughtful responses after the show, both in discussion and in writing, showed just how impactful the experience was—both academically and personally.  One of our students shared:

"On May 10th, I had the opportunity to attend a performance of An Inspector Calls, a truly captivating and thought-provoking experience. Before the show, we enjoyed two hours of free time to explore the Bullring. Many took the chance to grab a bite to eat, do a bit of shopping, and enjoy the atmosphere of the area. The performance itself was nothing short of remarkable. Set in the early 20th century but resonating with modern themes, An Inspector Calls delves into issues of responsibility, class, and morality. The staging was visually striking with dramatic lighting that heightened the tension throughout the performance. The cast delivered powerful portrayals, bringing their characters to life in a way that captivated the audience from start to finish. In particular, the mysterious Inspector Goole kept us all gripped until the very final moment. Overall, it was a day filled with excitement, mystery, and plenty of food, making it a memorable experience for all who attended." - James S, 10D

Special thanks to the staff who accompanied the trip and to our students for representing Kingshill so positively.
